The Evolution of Skincare Trends
By Alayah Brantley and Mehrien Sultana
It seems like beauty these days is not centered around makeup, but rather skincare. The global skincare market is estimated to be worth 109.71 billion USD, according to Fortune Business Insight. Current beauty trends focus on healthy, glowy skin, and many makeup products now boast skincare ingredients. Often, beauty gurus and makeup artists promote skincare as the first and most important step in any makeup look. But when did skincare become the focus of modern-day makeup routines? And how long have humans been implementing skincare into their daily regimen?
Skincare Through the Years
Healthy skin has been an indicator of health and beauty for millennia. Many cultures have deep-rooted routines and practices all related to the health of the skin. Cosmetics aside, healthy skin has always been a beauty standard.
Obviously, people in ancient civilizations couldn't order a ten step Korean skincare set from amazon. So, what did they have? Skincare varied from different regions and cultures. Ancient Egyptians, for instance, used honey for its antibacterial properties, a practice still popular today. Cleopatra's milk baths, while luxurious, highlighted the hydrating benefits of dairy. They even used olive oil to cleanse their skin and castor oil to moisturize and prevent wrinkles. The Greeks and Romans understood the importance of cleansing and moisturizing with olive oil, a staple in many modern skincare products. And in China, rice water was used to cleanse the skin and brighten the complexion. Rice is still a popular skin care ingredient today; utilized for its repairing and soothing properties
Fast forward to the Victorian era, where women relied on rosewater and oatmeal for soothing and brightening their skin. These natural ingredients remain beloved for their gentle and effective properties. The art of facial massage, also popularized during this time, is now recognized for its ability to improve circulation and lymphatic drainage.
The present and future of skincare
So where do past and present converge? As mentioned before, many ancient skincare ingredients are used today. Although rice water is not sold as a cleanser, rice-derived ingredients are. We use petroleum jelly in many cosmetics like lip balm and moisturizers, and castor oil is still used in hair growth serums.
Today's skincare scene is dominated by science-backed technology and ingredients. There is a focus on targeting specific skin problems such as hyperpigmentation, acne, and aging, with many products available for each concern. With the rise of social media, industries like makeup and skincare have flourished and become highly saturated. The skincare world saw a shift from DIY face masks to multi-step Korean skincare within the span of a few years. Currently, the focus is on sun protection and healing the skin barrier. Products still use ingredients derived from natural resources, just as the ancients did. However, skincare is now paired with other safe chemicals and molecules to increase effectiveness.
A Modern Skincare Routine for Combination Skin
Combination skin can be tricky to manage, with oily T-zones and dry cheeks. Here's a simple routine to help you achieve a balanced complexion:
Morning Routine
1. Gentle Cleanse: Start with a mild, water-based cleanser (Youth to the People Superfood Cleanser) to remove impurities without over-drying.
2. Hydrate: Apply a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer (Neutrogena® Hydro Boost Water Gel with Hyaluronic Acid) to your T-zone and a richer cream to your cheeks.
3. Protect: Finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher (EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46) to shield your skin from harmful UV rays.
