So, what exactly is "clean beauty?"
Clean beauty is a movement that emphasizes the use of beauty products that are made with non-toxic and environmentally friendly ingredients. Clean beauty promotes transparency in labeling, avoids harmful chemicals, and prioritizes sustainable practices. Clean beauty products are often free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances. By choosing clean beauty, individuals aim to prioritize their health and the well-being of the planet. Within clean beauty, brands often choose to use plant-based or natural ingredients as they are better for sensitive skin, eco-friendly, and less comedogenic. Consumers often assume cosmetic products are tested for safety, but the FDA does not pre-approve cosmetics or ingredients unless it's a color additive. Clean beauty products are often free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates, PPDs, and synthetic fragrances. Speaking of PPDs...
The Harmful Effects of PPD
P-phenylenediamine (PPD) is a chemical used in hair dyes and coloring products, often used to create long-lasting and vibrant hair colors. PPDs cause a wide array of negative reactions as the chemical is an irritant and allergen in approximately 5% of people. PPD is the 5th most common cosmetic irritant and the side effects include irritation, swelling, and blisters. It’s important to be aware of PPDs in hair dye products and to follow proper safety precautions. One alternative is performing a patch test before dying your hair, to find out if it will cause allergens or reactions. While it’s safer to avoid PPDs all in all, individuals with sensitive skin should especially avoid PPDs, as it can lead to discomfort and health risks.
PFAs in Cosmetics: Unveiling the Risks
Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl (PFA) are synthetic chemicals used for their water and grease-resistant properties. The use of PFA's started in the 1940s', where initially they were used in household products such as polishes, waxes, and cleaning products. Today they are known to be used in waterproof mascaras, long-lasting lipsticks, and other skincare products. There is growing concern about the potential health risks associated with PFAs, as the side effects include kidney and testicular cancer, thyroid disease, immune suppression, and reproductive toxicity. PFAS in cosmetics can be detrimental to the environment as they are not biodegradable, contaminate water systems, have bioaccumulation potential, and have many other negative ecological impacts, as they are known as “forever chemicals”. Using clean beauty products free from PFAs is essential for personal health and environment preservation, as it minimizes exposure to harmful chemicals and reduces the ecological impacts of cosmetics.

The Downside of Chemicals in Makeup Products
When buying makeup, we don’t really look closely at the ingredients. Some makeup or cosmetic products here in the US contain harsh chemicals that might be affecting your skin without you even realizing it. Certain chemicals like fragrances and synthetic dyes can result in irritation, inflammation, and itching, especially if you have sensitive skin. Preservatives like parabens can even trigger allergic reactions like rashes, swelling, and blistering. Also, if you struggle with breakouts and acne, your makeup’s ingredients, like certain silicones and waxes, can be the cause of clogging your pores. So, if you have been struggling with any of these issues, it might be good to try out beauty choices that prioritize clean, vegan ingredients. By choosing clean beauty, you will not only be taking care of the environment but also your well-being and health. Choose makeup/cosmetics products made with clean, plant-based ingredients to embrace your commitment to self-love and a healthy lifestyle! Thanks for reading :)
