I’m sure you’ve seen the Paraben-Free advertising on most cosmetics while browsing the makeup aisle. You’re probably even more likely to buy the products that don’t have parabens, but do you know why? What are parabens? Why are they harmful? Are they harmful? And are the alternatives any better?
Parabens are synthetic preservatives that go in a lot of things: cosmetics, toothpaste, deodorant, and the like. They give the items a longer shelf life and stop potentially harmful bacteria from growing inside.
Our knowledge is inconclusive on how harmful parabens actually are. We do know that they get under the skin and remain in our tissues. Some studies point to parabens possibly causing cancer, but at this time, we can’t say for sure.
If you want to be on the safe side and steer clear of all parabens, don’t be afraid to check the ingredients list on all cosmetic type items you buy from the grocery store. There are several types of parabens, including methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, and more. Just keep a lookout for ingredients ending in ‘paraben,’ and you should be good.
Be aware that parabens aren’t the only harmful thing that could be in makeup products. Studies are always being done on ingredients that may be unsafe for your skin. If you’re unsure, it’s always best to do a little research.
The good news is, many cosmetic brands are aware of potentially dangerous ingredients, not just parabens, and are willing to put in the time, research, and money to make safer products for our consumers.
If you’re conscious about the use of parabens, you may be concerned about many other ingredients and manufacturing conditions. If that’s the case, you’ll be happy to know that, in addition to being paraben-free, Godefroy is also proud to be:
